Falken EUROWINTER HS01 lands Top 10 place in Auto Bild’s 2018 winter tyre test with overall “Good” rating

Auto Bild has awarded the Falken EUROWINTER HS01 an overall rating of “Good” in its large-scale 2018 winter tyre test. After putting the tyre in size 195/65R15 through its paces on a VW Golf, the testers concluded: “Well-balanced winter tyre with safe, secure handling in snowy and dry conditions, superb safety reserves in aquaplaning and low price.”

The Falken EUROWINTER HS01 delivered particularly outstanding results in wet tests, getting top marks in both aquaplaning and corner aquaplaning. The tyre maintained contact with the track for the longest time, at a float speed of 88.3 km/h in nine millimetres of water – almost two metres (1.9 m) ahead of the second-placed candidate. The EUROWINTER HS01 also scooped first place in corner aquaplaning, with lateral acceleration of 4.09 m/s2 – precisely 0.2 m/s2 behind the reference summer tyre, and 0.2 m/s2 before the tyre in second place.

The independent testers awarded a rating of “Good” to the EUROWINTER HS01 for its performance in wet and snowy conditions and in dry braking. At a distance of 36.2 metres from a speed of 100 km/h, the Falken tyre was two metres behind the wet braking test winner, and just one metre behind the winner in braking on snow from 50 km/h. Dry braking results were also impressive, with a braking distance of 45.3 metres on the dry track from 100 km/h – a mere 1.5 metres longer than the winner.

In the drive-by noise category, the EUROWINTER HS01 delivered 66.3 dB at 50 km/h and 73.0 dB at 80 km/h; these results were in the top third of the table, with drive-by noise measured at 0.6 dB and 0.8 dB higher respectively than the reference all-weather tyres.

The Falken tyre’s value for money also received plaudits; priced at EUR 5.56 per 1,000 km driven, the tyre received 12 out of a maximum 15 points to land in seventh place for the category.

Traction on snow, handling in snow and dry, and mileage were also rewarded with ratings of “Good”, so that the EUROWINTER HS01 finished eighth overall in the test out of a total of 20 tyres.

“We’re delighted about the test results”, comments Markus Bögner, Managing Director and COO at Falken Tyre Europe. “We delivered good results in all the test categories. The list of our strengths presents clear proof that our engineers have developed a tyre that is well able to cope with the challenges of European roads.”

To even be included in the final round of testing, the tyres had to pass braking tests on both wet ground and snow. The EUROWINTER HS01 was less than two metres behind the category winner in wet braking, returning a braking distance of 36.2 m from 80km/h, and only centimetres behind the winner in braking on snow from 50 km/h, coming to a standstill at 28 metres. This total of 64.2 metres brought the Falken tyre to eleventh place among the finalists. Out of the original 50-plus entrants, only the 20 with the lowest aggregate braking distance from both tests made it to the final.

The Falken EUROWINTER HS01 is available in 99 sizes from this season, now covering all common sizes. The range of sizes for the tyre’s SUV model, the EUROWINTER HS01 SUV, has likewise been increased for the new changeover season and now spans 39 sizes.
