New tyre wear detection capability enhances SRI’s Sensing Core technology

Falken Tyre’s parent company, Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) has developed new tyre wear detection technology to improve safety and contribute to the realisation of new mobility trends that are transforming the automotive industry.

This latest breakthrough advances SRI’s proprietary Sensing Core technology. Thanks to SRI’s extensive research into the dynamic behaviour of tyres, this innovative technology can detect various conditions related to the tyre, including pressure, load, and road conditions, and now adds tyre wear to its capabilities.

Specialised digital filtering technology analyses and interprets wheel speed signals as the tyres rotate, combining this with engine data and other vehicle information to calculate tread rigidity and determine wear levels. The technology not only alerts drivers to the wear condition of their tyres, but also enables the centralised management of tyre conditions over the cloud.

Setting the technology apart, Sensing Core uses the tyres as sensors and requires no additional detectors , making it completely maintenance free. With the capability of sharing wheel speed signal data and other pertinent information over the cloud, Sensing Core also allows for cloud-based detection of potential issues.

Along with additional advancements to come, Sensing Core holds enormous potential for future applications among mobility and transport service providers, ensuring the overall safety of operations while significantly reducing maintenance costs. It is a key technology contributing to SRI’s Smart Tyre Concept, which aims to accelerate the development of tyres and peripheral services to meet the demands of CASE (Connected, Autonomous, Shared, Electric), MaaS (Mobility as a Service) and other new mobility innovations that are shaping the future of the automotive industry.
