Falken Motorsports retires prematurely at the season highlight of the Nürburgring endurance series
Falken Motorsports had no luck at the ROWE 6h ADAC Ruhr-Pokal race, the season highlight of the Nürburgring endurance series: After a good qualifying session and a strong opening phase, Nico Menzel in the teal-and-blue Falken Porsche #4 had already taken the overall lead. At the start of the second lap, however, both cars fell victim to the onset of heavy rain, which even made it necessary to interrupt the race.
The GT3 debut of ex-Formula 1 driver Timo Glock thus came to a premature end. In qualifying, the 91-time Grand Prix starter had secured fifth place on the grid together with his team-mate Nico Menzel, immediately ahead of the #3 Falken Porsche, which was driven by Alexander Lynn and Alessio Picariello this weekend.
Even after the start of the race, which took place punctually at twelve o'clock on a dry track, the two Porsches of the Japanese tire brand impressed with a strong performance: While Menzel even fought his way into the lead during the first minutes of the race, Lynn defended his place in the top 10.
Then the Nürburgring showed its typical side: Sudden heavy rain at the start of the second lap of the race made the conditions in the "Green Hell" undriveable. Like many other drivers, both Menzel and Lynn slid off the track and were subsequently unable to continue the race, which was interrupted for almost two hours due to the conditions and the extent of the accident.
An incident had already occurred in the paddock on Friday evening in which several people were injured, some of them seriously. Falken Motorsports' thoughts are with the injured and we wish everyone involved a speedy recovery.
The next race in the Nürburgring endurance series, the 55th Adenauer ADAC Rundstrecken-Trophy, will take place on October 19.
